Induciencia event tackles the future of fusion in Spain

The Technical Director of IFMIF-DONES and Head of the Fusion Technologies Division at the National Fusion Laboratory in CIEMAT, Ángel Ibarra, focused his talk on the importance of the accelerator from a technological point of view

Induciencia (a Spanish technological platform of science industry) celebrated last March 2 an event on the future of fusion in Spain. The IFMIF-DONES Project was one of the key points given its importance from a technological point of view, as a scientific research infrastructure that requires cutting edge technology. The importance of DEMO was also emphasized.

The Technical Director of IFMIF-DONES and Head of the Fusion Technologies Division at the National Fusion Laboratory in CIEMAT, Ángel Ibarra, analysed the role of the particle accelerator in the future of fusion. Ibarra confirmed that the facility will generate significant technological development both in the areas of research and industry.

It was also noted that, besides working on the preparatory phase in the design of the governance model of the facility and the financial contributions, the entities involved in IFMIF-DONES are progressing as much as they can in the engineering design to start the construction as soon as its construction in Escúzar (Granada) is confirmed.

The Technical Director of IFMIF-DONES highlighted the importance of cooperation between research groups and companies in putting into operation the facility. Ibarra also stated there will be room in the project for SMEs, participating for instance in the operation and maintenance of the facility.

Over a hundred participants from universities, companies, and research centres attended the event. The main speakers were Joaquín Sánchez, Director of the National Fusion Laboratory, Pedro Velarde, Full Professor in Nuclear Physics at the Technical University of Madrid, and Ana Belén del Cerro, Industry Liaison Officer in Spain for Fusion for Energy and ITER at CDTI.
