What is IFMIF-DONES and where will it be installed?
The International Fusion Materials Irradiation Facility – Demo Oriented NEutron Source (IFMIF-DONES) is a single-sited novel research infrastructure for testing, validation and qualification of the materials to be used in future fusion power plants like DEMO (a demonstration fusion reactor prototype). In relation to this international project, in December 2017, Fusion for Energy (F4E) evaluated positively the joint Spain Croatia proposal to site the IFMIF-DONES in Granada.
IFMIF-DONES: an international project with multiple derivations
Since then, all parties involved in IFMIF-DONES have joined forces to begin the implementation phase with the initial steps for the construction of the civil engineering infrastructure. As a result, the IFMIF-DONES Preparatory Phase project was conceived, the aim of which is to elaborate and draft the consortium agreement allowing for the construction of the facility, included in the ESFRI 2018 Roadmap, in the province of Granada.
During the Preparatory Phase, critical financial, legal and organisational issues related to the international character of the IFMIF-DONES facility during its construction and operation phases will be addressed. Besides this, the project also has the aim to attract partners, not only during the construction phase of the facility, but also to ensure during the operation and exploitation phase of the project.
Although most technical design activities are being conducted within the framework of other ongoing projects (IFMIF-EVEDA and WPENS), several technical activities have also been included in DONES-PreP. The aim of such activities is to explore in detail the possible use of the IFMIF-DONES facility by other scientific communities, to explore possible design and strategic alternatives that could be of interest in the future, and to consolidate a network of supporting facilities that could be of interest.
Social significance of IFMIF-DONES
Finally, the high impact on society of such critical infrastructure goes beyond the interaction with purely scientific sectors. This infrastructure is conceived as a necessary milestone towards nuclear fusion and, hence, towards clean and sustainable energy production to mitigate climate change. As a result, IFMIF-DONES and its deep implications are considered essential and must be adequately and thoroughly explained to society and other scientific and industrial communities through the promotion of the relevant actions.
