Signature of the Consortium Agreement for Spain’s candidacy to build IFMIF-DONES in Granada

The Council of Ministers has authorised the adjustment of the budgetary limits to fulfil the cost commitments derived from the agreement between the Ministry of Science and the Regional Government of Andalusia to establish the Consortium that will support Spain’s candidacy and the construction of the scientific infrastructure IFMIF-DONES and the management of R&D related projects. This step strengthens Spain’s proposal to build this facility in Granada, a joint initiative between Spain and Croatia which has the full support of the European Fusion Program.

DONES-PreP gathers over 100 companies to explore business opportunities related to IFMIF-DONES

The construction of the first liquid metal and radiofrequency laboratories, the DONES-UGR Research Centre, the design of prototypes for the operation of the particle accelerator and the electric supply connections for IFMIF-DONES require the involvement of private companies. In the next three years, the preparatory activities related to the particle accelerator, the largest scientific infrastructure to be built in Spain, will generate opportunities for science industry over €26 million. This was the main conclusion of the event on upcoming opportunities for the industry sector in IFMIF-DONES, which gathered over 100 Spanish companies interested in identifying cooperation opportunities in the design, construction, and operation phases of the accelerator.

    Within the framework of the DONES-PRIME program, co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), different activities are being carried out to characterize the site of the future IFMIF-DONES. Among these, preliminary topographic and geotechnical studies have been developed of the entire plot and in greater depth. An intensive geotechnical study of the entire plot is currently in progress with special emphasis on the area of ​​the main building that will house the accelerators, lithium systems and test modules.

    CONICET analyses IFMIF-DONES at its Controlled Nuclear Fusion Conference

    The National Scientific and Technical Research Council of Argentina (CONICET) and the National Atomic Energy Commission (CNEA) of Argentina celebrated last May 31 and June 1 the Controlled Nuclear Fusion Conference. Ángel Ibarra, Head of the Fusion Technologies Division at CIEMAT and Technical Director of IFMIF-DONES, participated in the event.

    IFMIF-DONES at the Gravite Festival opening

    The multidisciplinary Gravite Festival is closely linked to IFMIF-DONES. The particle accelerator has been present in the three editions of this event, celebrated in Granada. In its third edition, the opening session focused on the large scientific infrastructure. The Technical Director of IFMIF-DONES, Ángel Ibarra, and the Vice-Rector for Research and Knowledge Transfer at the University of Granada, Enrique Herrera, participated in the discussion panel at the opening of the festival, which addressed IFMIF-DONES, Granada’s candidacy to host the facility, and the impact it will have at the local, national, and international level.
